The 50-year-old optician is hoping to see that standing grow through his new 1,300-square-foot upscale eyewear boutique Spec's, located in the Shoppes at Woodcreek at 1398 Highway 9 in Spartanburg.

Pitman, from the beginning from Vero Beach, Fla., said his concept will permit local customers to choose from a large selecting of eyeglass frames, sunglasses and contact lenses from the world's top designers.

“I'm hoping to do something unheard-of here,” he said. “I've heard too many times how people go to their doctor and then determine pressured to buy their glasses or contacts there. It's their right as a consumer to take their drug and shop around in order to get what they really want. We're accepted to focus on the high-fashion stuff, but at bottom I have something here for everyone.”

Pitman, who opened the store last week with the lend a hand of his wife, Gwen Pitman, said his products are for men, women and children, and they are geared to deal with any budget from the very high-end to the value customer.
