Constitution lawmakers are considering a measure that would prohibit the use of tanning facilities by anyone under the age of 14 without a written medicine. It would require in-person parental consent for those ages 14 to 18 and command an eye protector, according to the National Conference of Brilliance Legislatures.

Western junior Magda Dermendziev said she second-hand to go tanning when she was younger and would have been annoyed by the regulations, but she agrees with the widely known initiative.

“A lot of young people go, and they go more often than they should,” she said. “It’s nauseating for your skin and can cause cancer, so I think [the step is] a good idea.”

An estimated 21,904 tanning salons provide almost 28 million people in the U.S. each year, 2.3 million of them teens, according to IBISWorld. Of those 28 million, 71 percent are women 16 to 29.

On Oct. 9, California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law written by report Sen. Ted Lieu, making it illegal for children under age 18 to use tanning beds, the strictest tanning ordinance in the nation. While other states have age restrictions or regulations limiting minors, no other constitution has banned entirely the use of indoor tanning for minors. The ban goes into sensation effectively January 2012, according to Sen. Lieu’s website.
