"I like the information exchange with foreign physicians," Dr. Kindsfater said. "They appearance many different challenges than surgeons in the U.S. do, so their solutions are sundry. His talk at the Congress this September presented the results of his experimentation into a technique he has developed that has the potential for improving knee replacement surgery. For miscellaneous reasons, some patients have a follow-up operation several years after their initial total knee surgery. These operations are referred to as "revisions." Dr. Kindsfater has hand-me-down a small, triangular-shaped, titanium composite sleeve that improves bone growth around the implants in these modification surgeries.

Dr. Kindsfater performs surgery to aide more than 1,000 people a year who come to him for entire joint replacement. He said he performs about 800 knee replacements a year. In his other specialty, mount up to hip replacement, Dr. Kindsfater performs around 400 surgeries annually.

Participants in the marathon and 10-K hurry are bracing for freezing temperatures.

Deidre Douglas was nursing an old wrong Friday, but her knees won’t be the only pain sense during the race.

“I’m a little on tenterhooks,” Douglas said, but she’s reliant the cold weather won’t throw her off her procedure. “I can take the cold, because you have clothes on. Gets too hot and there’s only so much you can take off before it starts to become a tough nut to crack.”

Now runners are trying to put more clothes on, with hats, gloves and extended-sleeve shirts selling quickly at the Marathon’s constitution and fitness expo.

“We actually have been spending the last week or so shopping for clothes to vex during the first hour of the race,” one runner said.

Ray Pugsley, who owns the Potomac River meet company, says it’s important runners get to the start overdressed Sunday.
