Deathly animals, gas cylinders and hypodermic needles are among items being put into recycling by Wellingtonians.
But aside from the infrequent nasty surprise, people putting glassware in the wrong receptacle continues to be the biggest bugbear for collectors.
Ignoring the frustrations, Wellington City Council said most people were starting to get the attentively of the new system, which was beginning to prove its worth.
Five months after the new fortnightly recycling system was introduced, the committee said the levels of recycling were up, meaning the conclave was able to make $100,000 a month selling recycled goods – up from a $50,000 reduction before. If that trend continued, the council could make more than $1 million a year, which would store about a quarter of the collection service, CitiOperations overseer Mike Mendonca said.
"Wellingtonians can facilitate us improve on that by making sure recycling materials are uncomplicated and that their bin or bag doesn't include general rubbish."
