WADING birds in Anderton Variety Park have a new safe haven thanks to the efforts of a economy group and staff from Tata Chemicals Europe.

The Northwich-based entourage donated 50 tonnes of limestone for the engagement and nine employees got their hands dirty to help strengthen the artificial island in Haydn’s Pool.

Members of Friends of Anderton and Marbury (Suds) lent a helping hand to complete the ait, which was constructed from 200 car tyres filled with limestone and covered with sand and gravel, to engender a safe nesting ground.

John McClean, environmental foreman at Tata Chemicals Europe, said: “We have been Byzantine on a number of projects with FOAM at Northwich Woodlands to support improve the habitat for wildlife and last year built a cover up for bird watchers.

“For 2011 we were asked to advise construct an island from limestone that will act as a safe haven.

“We were more than pleased to donate the materials and dig in to protect the wading birds from genuine predators.”
