I’m prospering to vote for the public safety tax.

It has been a tax that has been on the books for many years now. I meditate on it maybe goes back to 1986 and the city is a full-amenities city and we just need the supplemental interest to make ends meet and they’ve counted on this for entirely a long time.

Could the city function without it? Yes. Hesitation now this tax is through 2012. If this didn’t pass there is time to readjust before next June before they do the next budget if they could under any circumstances put it up for reelection in March.

If the tax doesn’t pass, what I’m panic-stricken will happen is we will be reacting and that’s not the best position to be in for economic planning. It’s always good to be able to plan and get things unerringly and do it in a very prudent way that’s fair to everybody—the employees and the taxpayers—rather than to have to conduct oneself and just start cutting. In that way I am going to back up yes with the hope that the city will address the issues of staff member compensation.

With fresh changes in Linn County, the University of Iowa must try to drag on its mental-health resources more than it does.

The Linn County Scantling of Supervisors' approval of the first round of Mental Condition and Developmental Disabilities cuts will result in an influx of patients developmentally and mentally incapacitated patients in nearby Johnson County.

Mental-trim services are invaluable, especially to those who don't have the financial means to protect their own treatment. Iowa City and the university must generate efforts to accommodate any displaced patients at prices they can offer.

This first round of cuts, approved by the county's Mad Health and Developmental Disabilities Advisory Panel and totaling $2.3 million, mostly affects residents of Marion's Abbe Center for Community Regard. The plan will necessitate the shift of nearly 100 residents from the mind a look after facility to smaller, local group homes such as the Abbe Center.
