CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Charleston held the important of sustainability high Saturday afternoon as hundreds crowded into the old Columbia Gas construction on MacCorkle Avenue for the third annual Kanawha Valley Sustainability average.
"Sustainability" came in all forms - from spirit and food to healing herbs and diapers. Dozens of vendors set up shop in quod and out of the building to either show off their environmentally-friendly wares, or goad for a potentially earth-saving cause.
Periodically, Michelle Coffman sat on a chair while sundry patrons lay face down in front of her. As she gently sank her heels into their backs, hot mizzle cloud up spewed from a glass bulb on a table within a mile of by.
Coffman, a licensed massage therapist, was practicing Fijian massages - where the masseuse uses feet, rather than hands, to release tightened muscles.
Feet and legs, Coffman explained, are much stronger appendages and more advisedly suited for massaging. As she worked, a calming herbal savour penetrated the air.
